Parent Organization: Service Group Category (undergraduate) - Advised by Millicent Morris Chaney

Teach in Prison is a student run DeCal class that sends Cal student tutors to work with incarcerated students at San Quentin Prison (SQ).  The primary tutoring groups work on phonics, proof-reading papers and grant proposals, counting and numbers, H.S. math, GED prep, and more.  We also have a team of mechanical engineering graduate students who teach computer aided design to inmates in San Quentin's machine shop.  Furthermore, there is a weekly class room meeting where guest lectures from all facets of the prison system present lectures that help students understand topics like: how prisons operate; what sort of education a person gets in prison; what it’s like to be a prison guard; what prison programs are there beyond Cal to get involved with.  It’s a very unique and rewarding experience for many students, and the program is in it’s 16 year as a DeCal.  We have in the past, won the Campus Community Partnership Award.
